Chapter 29

Alma Goodwin had once said that with his bedroom eyes and sexy swagger, Travis would get into more trouble than Tyler, yet could sweet talk his way out of it. Tyler, on the other hand, was recklessly impulsive and wouldn’t see trouble coming from all sides until he was nose first in a pile of shit.

It had been a mistake to have Angie drive the Vic while Tyler held a gun on her. All she did was taunt him, tell him he didn’t have the balls to pull the trigger. When her driving became erratic, Tyler was afraid the cops would pull them over. So he had her pull off the isolated road and onto a dirt road with Travis close behind driving Angie’s sweet ride. She no sooner put the car in park then Tyler shoved the gun in the small of his back, opened the door, grabbed her by the hair, and dragged her across the front seat, tossing her onto the dirt like a bag of garbage.

Tyler’s rage had been all about jealousy. He had grabbed Angela by the throat, lifted her off of the ground and throttled her. Travis had tried to pull him off, but Angela’s words kept ringing in his ears. “You’ll never be as good as your brother. You’re a loser. You bring everyone around you down. I had to pretend you were Travis when we were in bed.” He knew she had only slept with him to get back at Travis. In that one moment, all he could think of was they were both better off without Angela in their lives.

As usual, Tyler had screwed up. Angela died without telling them anything. Travis always cleaned up his messes. It was Travis’ idea to break into one of the flimsy door locks at the motel and place Angela’s body in bed, let the old fart take the blame. Without identification on her or him, it would buy them time to find what they were looking for.

“What are we going to do?” Tyler asked for the fifth time. He watched Travis continue to pace. They were in a cabin located down a dirt road off of one of the back streets running parallel to 278. The owners were in Canada half of the year. It wasn’t swank but it would do.

“Quit your damn whining and let me think.” Travis wasn’t surprised he didn’t feel anything after Angela’s death. Retribution was what he had wanted, although not quite that final. And he couldn’t fault Tyler. After all, it was through Tyler that they had met Montana. And through Montana they had use of the cabin while laying low. Not quite his taste in décor. Ruffled curtains and lace doilies? No thanks. It needed some bear and deer heads mounted on the wall, maybe a bearskin rug.

“I don’t trust Montana,” Tyler said, just to try to fill the silence.

Travis stopped pacing and looked at his brother. “On that we agree. I knew a lot of guys like him in prison, strutting around, playing the role of big shot.
