Chapter 17

Alec

The time I spent with Bryce was exactly what I’d paid for—not just sex, but something to balance out the stress in my life. As weeks turned into months, his visits were somehow both an anchor and a lightning rod. They were something steady and comfortable, and they were a way to blow off all the chaos of the day. The long conversations in my bed or my garden were as grounding as the sex—nothing brought me back down to earth and soothed my frayed nerves like listening to him laugh about something or tell me a story from his past.

And it wasn’t just the predictability of our low-pressure arrangement that had me on this amazingly even keel. I’d had that with Cole, and it had been great, but Bryce was something else. He had a calming presence, a soft touch, and that smile that still never failed to make my heart speed up. I hadn’t a clue what it was he was doing to me, but I liked it a lot. I looked forward to the nights when he came over, and the best mornings were the ones where I woke up beside him. Everything we were doing would absolutely give me something to look forward to after the band’s tour ended.

That tour was coming up fast, too. The album was done now, and the band was busily rehearsing. It seemed like every day Kori was telling us more dates had sold out and even more had been added, which was great, but… also not. As much as I was looking forward to being onstage again, and even all the chaos and noise of being on tour, and as much as I was thrilled that there was so much enthusiasm for 7 Dragons, it was bittersweet because I’d be leaving Seattle for months. Possibly a year or more.

I won’t see Bryce.

My heart sank just thinking about that. What was the matter with me? I was always a little disappointed on my last night with Cole before a tour, but I was dreading my last night with Bryce.

Will you still be here when I get back?

Ah, that was it. It must have been. The last time I’d gone on tour, I’d come home to find my Gentleman had moved on. Who was to say Bryce wouldn’t do the same?

All I can do is enjoy the time we have.

Enjoy the sex. That beautiful smile. Sitting in the garden with him until long after the sun had gone down. Talking. Making out in the shower. Just being in the company of someone so sweet, and cute, and playful, and—

“Someone’s in a good mood today.”

I looked up from the lyrics I’d stopped working on at some point. “Hmm?”

Maxine laughed. “You’re sitting over here smiling to yourself while you’re writing.”

Was I? Oh. I was. And I’d barely written a thing because my mind had just kept wandering to the man I was looking forward to seeing tonight, but dreading leaving behind in a few short weeks.
