Ellie

I couldn’t sleep no matter how hard I tried. Seeing Rosie and then Nolan, the melodrama of dinner all ruminated in my head.

I was truly happy to see how much they had all grown and bettered their lives, but other things had changed as well. There was an easy back and forth banter between Charlie, Nicole, and Nolan at dinner–they had become a real family. I wasn’t sure I’d ever feel included again–not that it was their fault. I was the one who left while they just continued to live and make something of their lives. Had I ever really been a part of the group or was I just Connor’s tag along? No, that was silly. I was in danger of starting a pity party!

For the first time, I felt angry with Connor. This wasn’t his fault, he never chose to leave, he never wanted to hurt me, but I was angry all the same. Angry that we had been so attached, that even after all this time I struggled to move on. But, most of all, I was angry he was gone.

My mind wandered to Nolan in the car. For crying out loud… now I was mad with myself for feeling excited when he asked me out. For the first time in a long time, I wanted to say yes to another man, but, as always, the ghost of Connor made me feel guilty for living a life he wasn’t able to have.
