⁂

I stood under a bright and yellow moon, a clear sky, and shimmering stars. The sky was filled with a long, thin band of silvery-white dots. Waves crashed and hummed, and the buzz of the summer insects surrounded me. I breathed out a long sigh, closed my eyes, and stepped into the waves.

The salty water lapped my paws and dewclaw and soaked its way to just below my elbow. It was cold, refreshing, and the air stung with a sharp freshness. I pulled back and licked my paw, which tasted faintly of fish.

Far ahead rested the dark silhouette of an island mountain. It sat directly under the moon, and below it, moonlight rippled on the surface of the water until it converged as a white line, a narrowing path, from the beach to the island.

I tilted my head and sang for Ma and Pa. They responded with their songs from the island, not so far away, so I stepped into the waves and allowed the water to come up to my chest, then my neck, and finally, the cool water wrapped itself all around me. I kept going, into the dim depths of the sea, breathing in the water and feeling its tendrils all over my fur.
