Chapter Four
For the next two months, give or take a few days, the couple spent just about every minute together. Hudson taught Wren everything there was to know about the ranch and that included mucking out the stalls for the horses, collecting eggs and cleaning out the chicken coop. He showed her the books and all the bills he had to pay. He also gave her the keys to the extra vehicle he had just in case she needed to go into town.
Because he knew he owed her, he also attempted to explain how they came to need to be married. That when his grandfather passed away the ranch in whole was left to him, however with that responsibility came stipulations he had to meet to become its permanent owner.
The reason he wanted a wife was purely his doing but also in part keeping with the parameters of the will. Hudson had to have children to carry on the namesake and take on the ranch when it was their time, heâd added the wife part because he was raised to do the right thing, in the right order. Wife first, kids next.
He was given a deadline, he just hadnât told Wren about it but as far as he was concerned, they were ahead of schedule. The wedding had already happened and he was more than willing to work on the kids part as often as she would let him. He hadnât expected to have such deep feelings for Wren as quickly as theyâve developed. She hadnât said as much but he was sure she felt the same.
He had breakfast done but she wasnât downstairs yet like every other morning. That woman was usually an early riser, even up before him. Heâd just take her breakfast in bed. As he ascended the stairs, he could faintly hear a strange noise. He peaked in the bedroom and she wasnât in bed but he could hear more clearly now, she was throwing up in the bathroom. He put the tray of food on the dresser and approached the half-closed door, knocking softly.
âWren, hey are you okay?â
âYou can come in.â
Hudson pushed the door open and saw his wife down on her knees in front of the toilet, wiping her mouth with a washcloth.
âOh shit, are you okay? What can I do?â
She started to get up but didnât have much strength so he helped her up and walked her to the bed.
âI think you should get back in bed.â
âI donât feel very well. Whatâs that smell?â
She was turning up her nose at the scent wafting through the bedroom.
âOh, I made you breakfast in bed, French toast with over-easy eggs and bacon.â
She covered her mouth quickly and gagged.
âI canât Hudson, the smell is making me sick, none of it even sounds good, Iâm so sorry, it was so sweet of you to do.â
He was puzzled but would do whatever she needed.
âLet me get it out of the room.â
He grabbed the tray and disappeared, when he came back he opened the window to let the cool morning air in and turned the fan to face her better.
