The loud thump of Barrett’s body hitting the wall echoes through my office. With my hands gripping his dress shirt and a fierce scowl contorting my face, I’m struggling to control the unexpected anger that’s come over me.

The second I saw him walk in, something just snapped. Even though she’s trying valiantly to hide it, I still get whispers of the hurt Cadence is struggling with in the bond, and the Alpha’s hardheadedness is to blame. It’s about time someone knocks some sense into him, and that’s going to have to be me.

“What the fuck, Riggs?”

“What the hell happened with Cadence last night?” I’ve heard her version of the story. Now, I want his. If we’re pack, I need to clear this shit up fast, or everything we’ve started to build will crumble at our feet. Knowing Cadence is tied to us forever doesn’t stop this urgency firing up in my blood, telling me that I have to fix this because losing Barrett would leave a gaping hole no one else can fill. He’s important to her, which means he’s important to us.

His Adam’s apple bobs, and the ridges between his brows deepen.

“I fucked up. Again.” The tension suddenly leaves his body, and he deflates in front of me. “I was trying to finally explain why I pulled away, but then…”

“But then what?”

He sighs. “Her brother called, and everything went to shit.”

I take pity on him, releasing his shirt and stepping back. He doesn’t attempt to straighten his clothes or come at me. He just stands there looking so hopeless I actually start to feel bad for him.

“I don’t get you, man. You want her. I know you do. So tell her the truth and claim our girl. That’s all she’s ever wanted from you.” Shaking hands run down his face, and it’s then I notice the deep bags under his eyes and the bloodshot pupils. “You look like shit by the way.”

He laughs harshly. “Yeah, well, losing the only woman you’ve ever loved will do that to a man.”

“Be honest with me, Matthews. What’s the problem? Because it’s got to be more than just the infertility or your potentially looming retirement for you to keep fucking up this badly.”

His head drops, and he looks so damn defeated I almost want to give him a hug, but I’m not sure he’d appreciate that right now.

“Want to know how I became such good friends with Cohen and Crew? Why I spent so much time at their house instead of my own?” His voice is gruff, and he won’t look me in the eyes which tells me I’m finally about to get the full story.

“I want to know everything that could help me help you win our Omega back.”

He turns away, staring at the wall, after this sad, lost look replaces his usual confidence.

“I was five when my mother decided that her Alphas weren’t good enough for her. She left in search of the perfect pack, ignoring her current bonds to the detriment of my fathers.
