CHAPTER FOURTEEN

John

When we get to the second vineyard, it is sweltering outside, and we decide to forgo the hayride and just have dinner and our tasting. This winery is more modern, and everything inside the tasting room is steel, glass, and oak with lots of straight lines except for the oak and steel barrels.

Our host for the tasting is a woman, maybe in her early fifties, and she shows us where they have a private dinner table set up for us in a room off the main tasting room. It is cool inside, which is refreshing after stepping out of the valley’s heat, and we are seated at a beautifully set table. The room is reclaimed wood beams and stainless-steel ductwork at the top. It’s modern, but in a friendly way and still comfortable. The theme for the day must be flowers. It seems that everywhere we’ve been, there are flowers everywhere, and this room was no different. There are steel buckets of white flowers overflowing on just about every flat surface you could find. I think they did a great job of setting up a semi-private and romantic dinner as requested.

“This place is cool,” says Delia.

“Be careful; your California beach town is showing,” I joke.

“Knock it off. Seriously this is amazing. Hydrangeas are my favorite flowers,” says Delia.

“I had no idea, dumb luck on my part,” I say.

“I’m so ready for dinner. How about you?”

“Yup, I don’t know why wine and heat make me so hungry, but it has.”

“So, what are we having?” asks Delia.

“An assortment of things because I couldn’t decide. They are going to serve things family style so we can choose what we want.”

“That sounds great.”

“Are you two ready for some wine,” says our exuberant host rolling in a cart with six different wines on it.

“Yes, please,” says Delia with a cheerful smile. This has to be the best day I’ve had in a long time. I’m so glad she agreed to stay over.

“We will start with wines on the light and dry side and then move darker with more grit and bold flavors. This first one is a dry Cabernet with notes of fruit to it,” she says, pouring a taste into one of our glasses set before us.

We swirl, smell, and then sip as we’d been instructed. I like dry wines, and Cabernet Sauvignon is one of my favorites, so I enjoy this one, but I wait to see what Delia says about it.

“I taste the fruit, but I cannot place it. It’s delicious.”

“I like it too,” I say without elaborating.

Our host goes on to each subsequent wine, each getting a bit sweeter and with more grit to it. I like the Zinfandel with the blackberry undertones. However, Delia prefers the Merlot, so I purchase a bottle to go with our meal.

We eat steak that is tender and perfectly cut alongside slices of pork roast and chicken. There are Brussel sprouts and other vegetables as well as rice pilaf and whipped garlic mashed potatoes. The food is excellent.
