Chapter 20

Dee, Age Twenty-Six

June 2008

Even though Dee wasn’t off until eight, Ricky walked into Hank’s Bar and Grille a little before six. He grabbed a stool at the bar she was tending.

Smiling, she set a coaster in front of him and leaned over the bar. “Howdy, stranger. What’ll you have?”

He made a show of checking out her cleavage. “The bartender.”

“The bartender isn’t on the menu,” Dee informed him primly, nevertheless grinning. “You’ll have to order a drink, or I’ll have you bounced. So, what’ll it be, cowboy?”

“Water. I’m dehydrated from this morning.”

She rolled her eyes. “Try again.”

He gave her a wicked grin. She knew that look. He was about to be naughty. And that would probably goad her into being naughty, too.

“I’ll have a Wet Pussy,” he announced, full volume, without the slightest hint of decorum. Luckily the bar was mostly empty.

Dee gasped. “Ricky!”

His grin widened. “That’s a real drink. You don’t know how to make it?”

She narrowed her eyes in annoyance and lowered her voice. “No, Ricky, I don’t know how to make a Wet Pussy.”

“Luckily for you, I do.” He winked.

She blushed. “Stop it. Order something else.”

“Hmm.” He stroked his chin as though he was thinking. But he was looking naughty again, so she knew he was about to be a jerk. “How about a Dick Sucker. I know you know that one.”

“Sorry, that’s not on the menu tonight, either,” she replied tartly.

“That’s disappointing.” He drummed the bar with his fingers. “What is on the menu? Tie Me to the Bedpost? Slippery Panties? Sex in the Driveway? Hanky Panky? Lick Her Right?”

“None of them, if you don’t order a beer right now. Or would you rather I hose you down with water since you need to cool off?” She held up the sprayer and threatened him with it.

“Alright, alright, Dee.” He held his hands up in surrender. “No need to be violent. I’ll have a Guinness. And some water, please. But only if it’s in a glass.”

She poured his drinks and slid them over. “How do you know the name of so many dirty cocktails?”

“I’m in the Army, Dee. You’d be shocked by the things we talk about.”

“What about the things you do? Would I be shocked by them, too?”

She meant to be flirty, but a shadow crossed his face. “Yeah, by some things.”

Wincing, Dee smoothed her palms down her apron. Why was she so bad at flirting?

He got up and selected a song on the jukebox. “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” came on, and his playful mood was back. “Come here, Dee.” He beckoned her to join him on the tiny bit of dance floor.

“I’m working.” She turned her shoulder to him and checked on the only other person at the bar, who didn’t need anything at all.

“It’s your last day,” he called after her. “What’s Hank gonna do? Fire you?”

“You can’t tempt me with that song,” she called back.

“OK, what song would you like, darlin’?”

She came out from behind the bar and leaned over the jukebox. She’d never selected the music, so she actually didn’t know what was in there.
