Chapter Seven
Dru
âYou still went down there after we specifically told you not to? Did you not understand me when I said it? Did you think I was playing?â I had been listening to my dad rant and rave for the better part of twenty minutes, and the shit was getting old. âSpeak!â His fist landed on the table top as our eyes locked onto one anotherâs. Moâ and I had gone to finally tell them about me visiting Evelyn four months earlier.
âIâm not a dog, so donât speak to me like I am one.â My demeanor was calm, but judging by the grip on my arm, Moâ was trying to keep me from exploding. âI heard you when you told me not to go, but I wasnât asking you for your permission. I was being considerate in telling you that I more than likely would go.â
âDo you know me to be talking to me like that, boy?â He had straightened to his full height as if ready to declare war. âYou mind your mouth in this house.â
âDavin,â my mom finally said as she placed her hand atop his. She had been sitting between the two of us but facing me. Her eyes no longer reflected happiness and joy; the lines around them had been riddled with worry and stress brought on from my birth motherâs arrival into our seemingly perfect lives. Her lips trembling, she spoke to me. âAndru, did you talk with her?â The question threw us all off, my dad seeming as though he could set fire to rain. âDid you get her to answer your questions...questions you could have come to me about?â
âQuestions you should have come to us about,â he spat over her shoulder. He had begun pacing with his hands on his hips and his head tilted upward.
âWhy does it matter why I went there, momma?â I leaned in to her and spoke softly. I couldnât bring myself to even try to place myself in her shoes. âI just had to go see her and talk to her.â
âSo you got the closure you needed?â The eagerness in her question shocked me, and it was as if she were hoping my answer would end the entire situation altogether. âDid you?â
âMomma...she birthed me. There are over twenty years of catching up she and I have to do; I canât ignore that. I know you donât want me to, but Iâm really not asking you for permission to do something I donât need permission to do. Yes, you and daddy raised-â
âYou damn right we raised you!â He damn near roared at me as he came closer. âWe took you in when there was no one or nowhere else for you to go!â
âYou said that already, and I already know that. Donât you think I know what it was like living with a woman who didnât care if I ate or not, let alone care if I was loved? You donât know what I had gone through while living under your roof.
