CHAPTER

I rush to Xandra, making sure she is still breathing. She is. Mathild screams again and I fix my eyes on her. “Leave!” I order, not willing to deal with her hysterics any longer. While I scoop Xandra into my arms, the maid slides along the wall staying as far from us as possible until she reaches the door.

Once again, I send a mental message to Dagda. If my messages had not been about Xandra, he would kill me for having sent so many in one day. I carry her to the bedroom we are to use and lay her down on the bed. I cannot help but think that it was only moments ago that we were making love on this bed. I would give anything to be back there.

It only takes a few minutes for Dagda to arrive. Seeing Xandra on the bed, he shakes his head. “Again? The girl is going to suffer permanent brain damage if she keeps on like this.”

I glare at him. “I do not believe that is her goal.” Xandra stirs on the bed but it is only to thrash a little and mumble. She has been doing this since I brought her in here.

“What happened?” Dagda asks. I explain what I can. “Mathild said nothing about what she saw and you did not see who threw the hex bag?” he asks.

I shake my head. “No,” I tell him again. “I felt it more prudent to take care of Xandra than to give chase.” The wound on her head is still bleeding despite the fact that I’ve been putting pressure on it and sending healing magic toward it.

“Send a message to Sindri to lock down the palace immediately. I also want to question Mathild. She must have seen something.” He turns to leave but stops when Xandra stirs again.

She seems to be waking finally. I focus all of my attention back on her. “Xandra, Angel, are you okay?”

The first words out of her mouth are, “I’m evil. My evilness looks like an old crone with seeping head wounds.”

She is injured worse than I feared. “I believe you may have sustained a serious head injury.”

She shakes her head and sits up. I do not like the color of green she turns with the movement, but she does not throw up. “No head injury, I’m just evil.”

Dagda runs a frustrated hand through his hair. “Oh for god’s sake, this again?”

Xandra glowers at him. “Has your trophy for ‘Father of the Year’ come yet?”

Not to be outdone by her sarcasm, Dagda spits out, “It will come from the silversmith at the same time as your trophy for winning the ‘I’ve whined the most about my father being a Fairy so therefore I must be evil’ competition.”

To my great surprise, Dagda has managed to render her speechless. Bringing her attention back to me instead of their pointless argument, I say softly, “Xandra, why do you think you’re evil?” I do not add again with much restraint on my part.
