With Aza next to her, Yua walked around the sparring grounds for a while to get her thoughts in order. Even so, Aza didnât feel close. With every interaction Yua had with Uta, every time she mentioned him, Aza became more distant. The empressâs offer was a growing rift between them that Yua didnât know how to cross. If her assurances that she had no intention of marrying him werenât good enough for Aza, what else could she do?
âThis army isnât as large as it should be,â Aza said. âMidoka has grown complacent without any wars in recent history.â
Yua nodded. âI was surprised, too, but donât forget they all use the gift to fight. They can do more damage than other armies.â
âWill that be enough?â Aza looked at her. âWhen the Dark One comes riding in and starts killing people with His legions of Mothers and shadows, do you think this small army will stand its ground?â
Yua shivered. âWe know the Mothers are weak against fire. Thereâs no army better suited to unleashing whole storms of it. If we canât defeat them, no one can.â
âAnd then the rest of the world will die, too.â
Yuaâs forehead creased in confusion. This wasnât the conversation she had expected. âWhatâs brought this on?â
Aza blinked. âSorry. Iâve been contemplating life a lot lately, but I donât usually feel this grim.â
Yuaâs heart missed a beat. âAnd when you contemplate your life⦠am I still in it?â
She had meant it as an easy question and had expected an easy yes with an easy grin, but Aza hesitated.
And that said everything.
âI want you to be,â Aza finally said, âbut are we realistic or is this just another daydream?â
âWhy would it be a daydream?â Yua took Azaâs hand to try to cross some of the rift, but touching her didnât make her feel any closer. âWeâre already together. Why wouldnât we stay together?â
Azaâs eyes clouded over as she stared into the distance. âBecause neither one of us was made to settle down. Sand Blades work until they eventually die on the job, and youâ¦â She focussed on Yua, and Yua wished sheâd look anywhere but at her for all the pain she saw in Azaâs eyes. For the sad acceptance in them. âYou were meant for greater things still.â
âYou canât seriously mean that I should rule Midoka,â Yua said. âWe talked about this. I donât want to marry Prince Uta. I donât want to be empress.â
âYouâre right, we did talk about it, so donât pretend that royalty never marries for strategic reasons. You must have read about it in those books you love, too.â
âThose books speak of all kinds of impossible things! I once read about a winged horse sent by the gods. I loved it and wanted one, but you donât see me with one now.â
She didnât want to grow frustrated, resented herself a little for not staying calm and getting angry instead, but it sounded like Aza had already decided their fate and wasnât likely to change her mind.
