WHEN ALICE AWOKE AGAIN, she was in the dungeon where Nashira had sent her to punish her only days before. This time, however, she was lying on a stone slab, to which she had been heavily chained. The chains covered her entire body from the neck down, so that she could only turn her head.
Alice felt . . . potent. Stronger. Nashiraâs blood was pumping hot through her, pulsing in her ears. Her body stirred with hunger, but the hunger in her belly was different, more sharp, nagging, and intense. She hungered for blood. The taste of Nashiraâs sweet blood was still on her lips and she longed for that intimacy again, wanted Nashira in her arms as she sucked, sucked so passionately on her nipple. She remembered Nashiraâs loving fingers in her hair, the feel of Nashiraâs skin against her own, and lay there in her chains, savoring it.
She could recall her memories now as if they were happening in real-timeâall the sensations and tastes. And the smells. The smells were more intense as well, present and past. So was sound and color. She could hear someone approaching her cell â could hear them from the second floor of the mansionâand turned her face to the cell door.
The approaching stranger was a woman. Tiny feet, but a woman. A young adult. Alice could smell her sex, how ripe and mature it was. She was a mortal woman . . . And she was menstruating. The faint scent of the blood grew stronger as the woman approached.
But who could it be? Not Sabrina or Sybelle. She would have smelled their perfume. In fact, if she was still, she could hear Sabrina and Sybelle in the kitchen, searching through the cabinets. She could hear the rustle of their garments, the sound of their small feet on the kitchen floor. One of them was humming. They chatted in low voices, though she couldnât make out the words. They seemed content. They were giggling, gossiping. Alice had a sour feeling it was about her.
A second later, and Nashira appeared on the other side of the bars. She looked like her calm, collected self again, her dark hair falling long and smoothly brushed behind her shoulders as she stood in her immaculate black suit, beautiful, powerful . . . and disturbed.
Alice couldnât believe it, but Nashira . . . was afraid of her! The vampireâs eyes were cautious as she observed Alice through the bars of her cell, and she made no move to enter.
Standing beside Nashira was the mortal woman Alice had scented earlier. She looked like a shepherdess from a nursery rhyme, with her long golden hair, pink cheeks, and sweet, round eyes. Little Bo Peep, have you lost your sheep? Alice thought, and a soft laugh escaped her, sliding through her fangs.
The woman wore a simple patched dress, behind the fabric of which her great breasts stood prominent. Her feet were bare of shoes or even socks but were clean and soft, as if she had only just bathed.
