“He knows, Vencen, he knows,” she says frantically, attempting to fight off Venison’s little arms that try to hold her down. “He’s going to turn the Crystal Spear around. He’s going to get me. He’ll take me back to Father. We need to go. We need to run.”

His arms wrap around Dex tighter, pulling her to him, and the gnawing within my chest that has been eating at me all night roars once more, loud enough to make me deaf to the terror I feel within her.

Jealousy: a despicable sensation reserved for mortals too weak to attain their heart's desire. I am well acquainted with the destructiveness of greed, however, I am beyond jealousy—it is such a feeble concept that poisons the mind into becoming nothing more than one’s basest desires. I refuse to accept that the anger that plagues me when men or women glance at her is anything more than something as simple as because she is my only ticket to fulfilling my purpose, and they are mere obstacles that may get in the way.

Kill them, the voices rasp. Bathe in their blood.

The chaos of my power claws at my chest, snapping, whispering its hunger for blood. And that elf… Rage burns brighter within me in memory of the feeling that blossomed in her chest when she saw him: a toxic mixture of fear, longing, and love. No, it is not jealousy; she simply has terrible taste in men, and it’s getting in the way of our goal. Plus, he is too old for her. If what she wants is to find love, then she needs to quash all thoughts of that elf or that selkie maiden, and especially that winged male that should thank the divine he continues to breathe.

But I have no care or interest in her love life. There is no room for such things. I have no time for it. This is all just a mission, nothing more.

Dex knows the elf somehow. Because of the Hinixians, her fingers have not ceased to still in their tremors since the encounter. It is not the right time to pry for information about it, not when asking her about her fear will not solve the problem. She needs her worries soothed.

“Deep breaths, Dex,” he whispers slowly, softly blowing into her hair and sending that primal being within me into another inferno. This time, I know the purpose of my rage: it’s him. Such simple words meant to be filled with patience and comfort, and yet, his words are dipped with poisonous impatience. “It was an innocent statement. Blood and moon just so happen to be in the same sentence.”

“We don’t have time to rest. We need to keep riding.” She glares up at him.

Kill them, the voices taunt, darkness swirling in the shadow. I grit my teeth, stamping the chaos away as the harsh glow of the moon filters through, taking the space where shadows once occupied.

Listen to her, stupid mortal, keep walking, I try to communicate into the male’s mind knowing I won’t break through.
