Chapter 13

BLOOD SPILL

DIEGO STANDS WITH ME OUTSIDE my door, hooking his fingers around my waist. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I had an amazing time with him, even if my whole body aches now. After having dinner on the terrace overlooking the outdoor pool, where I had things I’ve never eaten before like the huge meatballs in the most amazing sauce, Diego put me through the most intense workout ever, where after he joked he could help me wash my hair in the huge shower. We ended the night with movies in the actual theater with popcorn for me and blood in a goblet like the ones I dreamed about the night before for him. He was nice enough to ask if it was okay, and I agreed. Might as well get used to it, though something about knowing it wasn’t my blood made me feel weird.

“You want to come back to my room?” Diego asks, leaning closer. He captures me with his brilliant smile, the gesture lighting up his whole face, making him even more handsome. I study the sharp curve of his jaw, his soft brown hair curling around his ears and unstyled.

I almost nod, but a part of me holds back. If I go to his room, I might never want to leave, and I know that’s unfair to both Kingston and Austin. I haven’t had time to give them much of a chance, and I’d like to.

Instead of responding with a rejection, I stand up on my tiptoes and he bends forward to meet his lips to mine. I kiss him sweetly just long enough to feel him tighten his grasp on me. He beams his brilliant smile again, his gray eyes sparkling in the soft light. That was better than I imagined my first kiss to be—sweet and soft and teasing enough that I can’t wait to try it again.

I grin, rubbing together my lips. “I had a really great time, Diego, but I spent the day with you yesterday and—”

He brushes his fingers to my cheek. “Hey, you don’t have to explain. While I’d love to spend the rest of the day with you today, I get it. I know you like my brothers too.”

“I just want to give all of you a chance.”

“And you’re amazing for that,” he responds, peering around the hallway. “Walk me to my room?” Diego must suspect that my mind is made up to already head that way, where Austin’s room is supposed to be the last in the hall. I’m grateful he doesn’t point it out.

I nod. “Sure.”

Diego smiles at me while closing his door, and I only hesitate for a minute, peering around the dim hallway. For a split second, I consider running back to my room to change out of my dress, but then I hear soft voices coming from that direction and then footsteps.

Bowing my head, I stare at the patterned floor runner leading down the hall, longer than I had expected it to be.
