HISTORY

First built by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation in the late 1940s, the F9F Panther quickly became the most widely used U.S. Navy jet fighter during the Korean War. The F9F Panther was also the first aircraft of the war to score an air-to-air kill, shooting down a North Korean Yak-9 fighter jet on July 3, 1950. With the ability to take off from and land on aircraft carriers and carry 2,000 lbs. of air-to-ground rockets and bombs, the F9F was an effective weapon for the U.S. Navy. By war’s end, more than 1,400 had been built.
