Last night was not a topic that anyone discussed. We didn't dance around it, we all pretended that it never happened.
But I knew we were all aware.
Max joined us for dinner and it was unusually quiet all around. I watched the two of them like a hawk, eyes flitting between them as they both looked anywhere but each other.
Well no, that's not entirely accurate.
Hope was doing her best not to stare at the man. She was looking at her plate, looking up at the art on the walls, even looking over at me though her eyes were glazed over and I knew she was looking past me every time she did.
But Max, he was just sitting there with a slightly smug smile on his face the whole time. Eating and occasionally glancing over at me.
He wasn't looking past me. He was looking straight at me with this gaze that said he knew he'd already won.
I should have said something to Hope this morning over breakfast. I should have said something to her over lunch or at any point when it was just the two of us, when Max was still asleep.
I should have pulled her aside and told her all about my history with him. Told her what he'd done to me countless times. Hell I even could have called and booked us a weekend away somewhere, arranged for a helicopter and a flight, and abandoned the house and this place to him for a few days.
I would have given my whole house to avoid what I knew was coming. I would have given anything, but I knew that I didn't have it in me and I knew perfectly well why.
"Are you heading out tonight again, Max?" I asked, desperately hoping that he would say yes and that he would leave the two of us alone.
It was my last desperate stand. If I could get her alone for a few hours I could swallow hard and tell her the truth. I could tell her what Max had done, but more importantly, I could tell her what I had done in the past. I could tell her what Max meant to me, that he was my bully and more than just that.
"No," he said, "I think I might have drained out all the entertainment in this little city. A night in sounds good."
For the first time he looked over at Hope, slowly and deliberately. She was staring at her plate at the time but I knew she could feel his gaze on her. I watched her cheeks start to redden. I watched her hand start to tremble.
"I have other cars," I said desperately, "Nicer than the one you took out. I could pay your way even, pull a few strings and get you VIP service anywhere. I could-"
"I cannot be bought, Roger," he said bluntly, not moving from my wife.
"That's not polite, Roger," she corrected me, "Don't try to treat our guest that way."
It was too late. It was all far too late.
