Anne Afshari and Laura Hagler of Exclusively RNs
With no formal business training, these two enterprising nurses turned to the Internet and off-the-shelf guides to find out how to prepare a proposal and business plan. Anne and Laura made their first client pitch in mid-November 2002; by the end of November, they had written their first proposal, chosen a name, decided how to set up their business legally, and sorted out basic accounting issues. Their basic business concept was elegantly simple, but logistically challenging: they planned to set up a phone-based advisory service for expectant mothers that doctors could subscribe to as a way to relieve their workload.
While handling the business side of their start-up, Laura and Anne also created an operating structure. This meant designing detailed protocols for fielding calls, researching standards of care, anticipating medical complications, and creating a documentation system. By January 1, 2003, Exclusively RNs was officially launched with its first client on boardâand Anne and Lauraâs beepers were busy! From the first night, they saw huge potential and invested countless hours to get their venture off to a solid start.
âEven though we knew we were working extremely hard,â recalls Laura, âwe didnât recognize or at least we didnât verbalize how much time we were putting in. We were working at home late at night, early in the mornings, and when the children were taking naps. This was one of the biggest things we were unaware of: the time commitment involved. We were working one hundred hours a week between our full-time jobs and building our business.â
