Queen Julie awoke with the sun. Most of her barbarians slept till about noon, meaning her threat of invading Bimbo Island at sunrise had been somewhat empty. She didn’t care. You didn’t become the Ruler of any land without a bit of subterfuge.

She got up off the floor - there were no beds on Barbarian Island - and walked over to the one window in her hut. As the Queen, she lived on the highest point on the craggy island, looking down at the other ramshackle huts built around Mount Julie. She’d named it herself.

The clothing she put on was tailored to her ropey body. She didn’t have many outfits, nor did she want more. The athletic rayon shirt that clung to her slim physique and the surf shorts she wore were good enough. Back in society, the look would have been called boyish, especially with her closely cropped hair. She wasn’t in society anymore though. Now, as the Queen of Barbarians, her focus was on fighting. That was what she commanded, and that was what she dressed for.

She began the hike down from her mountain abode and into the village proper, sticking close to the wall of the mountain on the path. Copper and iron ore sparkled in the sunshine as she passed, and she made a mental note to send someone up to mine it later. The island was rich in ore; in fact, it was really its only resource. Bimbo Island, she knew, had all the wildlife, fauna, and fruit. After months of eating nothing but bony fish, birds, and an odd green mushroom that grew plentifully around the mountain, she was looking forward to some actual nutrition.

Not that she could complain much about her carnivorous diet. She credited the meat for giving her the focus needed to command these men. The barbarians were powerful, but also dumb, and grateful to have a thoughtful figure to lead them. She was their Queen - a dictator, but a beloved one. Not only would she lead them to conquer Bimbo Island, but the entire world as well. She wasn’t sure how, but she knew she could.

In due time. First, she had to make sure that bastard Daniel was no threat. His survival was as much a surprise to her as it was to him. Though she hid it well, she had been so shocked to see him that she found herself granting him a reprieve from invasion before she even realized what she’d done. Delaying the invasion for him had been an act of actual sympathy. She wouldn’t make that mistake again, nor would she analyze why Daniel had had that effect on her.

“Julie.”

She could even hear his voice now, stepping off the mountain path and onto the hard black rock that covered the entire island.

“Hey, Julie.”

The Queen felt a hand on her arm. She leapt back and picked up a metal pole that was stuck in the ground. It was an early aborted attempt at forging
