CHAPTER FIFTEEN

They continued on, crossing the plane which no longer descended but became an endless trek towards the shape that lay before them. It began to take form towards the end of the day and as the light dimmed, it was clear that it was a city, or had been one and that it now resembled a tomb of pale brown stone. Its walls, once very high in places, had been torn down long ago and the exposed buildings beyond it were roofless and sagging. Some had been smashed into rubble whilst others had been extended in all directions with newer brick. Over it all, great towers reached up into the sky, most just fractured things like rotting trees, others tall and magnificent but now reduced to forgotten relics of an unknown, bygone era.

When the light had almost failed, Hannah stopped and turned to look at Kelly.

“What do you think?” she asked her. The final traces of light seemed to have clung on to those gilded curls and they shimmered as she shook her head.

“We should explore it in the dark,” she replied. “I don’t know if those things can see better or what—”

“One of them was able to walk quite easily in those tunnels,” Hannah pointed out.

“Okay, but do you really want to camp out here?” Kelly gestured to the expanse of open land they were standing in. She was right, there was no shelter for miles and by dawn they would be even more exposed.

“I take your point. Let’s go.”

She was about to set off when Kelly’s hand reached out and grasped hers. Without saying anything more, they made their way carefully towards the city in this way until they reached the first of the ruined walls.
