Chapter Thirteen
THE TEXT FROM BENNETT READ: Just got word. Kathleen Bevins is dead. Definitely foul play.
Chelsea stared at the phone for a moment and then peered around the restaurant.
She leaned over the table and whispered, âDo you think theyâre connected? The killings.â
Addie looked at her phone again, as if it would have the answer.
âTheyâve got to be,â she whispered. âIt would be too much of a coincidence to assume otherwise.â
She pictured the attractive, red-haired woman and tried to imagine who would want her dead.
âThe thing is, if anyone would want her out of the picture, it would have been Brent,â Addie said.
âWhat about Brentâs new fiancée?â
âYeah, if Brent were still alive,â Addie said. âBut with Brent dead, what does the fiancée stand to gain?â
âI just donât understand who would want to kill both of them.â
âI donât either,â Addie said and then exhaled heavily. âBut the unfortunate thing is, she was the one suspect who mightâve been too obvious for the police to ignore in Brentâs case.â
Chelseaâs shoulders sagged a bit. âRight.â
âNow, Iâm not sure thereâs any way weâre going to be able to pry the police departmentâs attention away from Violet and Marvin.â
âWell, just because Kathleen is dead doesnât mean she didnât kill Brent. Somebody else could have killed her.â
âThatâs possible, but with Kathleen dead, we canât check her aura. We have to hope that some other evidence surfaces.â
âSmall chance of that, if Chief Clemmens is determined to pin Brentâs killing on the Shufflers.â
âI know. This is really bad.â Addie slumped, feeling deflated and a little stunned by the turn of events. âIâll see if Bennett knows anything more.â She fired off a quick text.
The food arrived, but Addie had lost her appetite. She managed to make it through half of one of the two enchiladas on her plate. Chelsea appeared to be having the same problem and was only picking at her taco salad.
Addieâs thoughts were tumbling around as she tried to come up with a new theory on Brent Bevinsâs murder that would force the police to look for the real killer.
Bennett sent another text saying he didnât have any details yet but was working on getting more info from his source in the police department.
âDo you think Javier could have, you know, done both the killings?â Chelsea asked, her voice so low Addie could barely make out the words.
Addie glanced around. âLetâs get the rest of this to go so we can talk more freely.â
âGood idea.â
Maria brought to-go boxes and took the two credit cards. She barely glanced up and didnât make eye contact. Normally, Addie and Chelsea would have been asked if the food was to their liking, especially since theyâd barely eaten any of it. But Maria was definitely distracted.
When she brought the receipts for signatures, Addie didnât reach for them. Instead, she waited until Maria looked up.
âMaria, do you and your family need help?â Addie asked quietly.
As much as she wanted to prove the Shufflers innocent by finding the true killer, she also felt sorry that the Hernandezes seemed to be having difficulties.
