Standing outside Omaha’s Western Union office, Frank Caroni read Eliza’s brief message, then crumpled it into a tight ball. Damn her! She hadn’t given him a name. That could only mean that the Pinkerton was onto him. And the most likely Pinkerton was Case Brogan. But how in the hell had Brogan managed to hook up with Eliza?

Frank returned to the flea bag boardinghouse where they were staying, but hesitated at the bottom of the staircase. The last thing he wanted was to hear the whines of that sickly, horse-faced wife of his. He went instead to the White Gull tavern down by the river to formulate a plan. By his estimation, Eliza would be arriving in two days.

First, he needed to know for sure if it was Brogan. If it was, he’d have to be extra clever. He’d need a way to separate Brogan from Eliza, something guaranteed to keep him occupied long enough for Frank to grab the money and get down to the docks.
