As I open my eyes, I see it is morning and I wonder why there is no smell of food. Every morning, since coming to this land, I have been awakened by the aroma, knowing Cherish was making a wonderful morning meal to start our day. I climb out of bed and go to the door to listen. I hear no sounds or voices. I change into my day clothes, wondering if maybe I have slept through the morning meal. I think about how tired I was before falling asleep. That has to be it; I was just too tired and did not hear the knocking on my door. Which I do not understand since some of my other chores have made me very tired, and I did not sleep through those times.

I step out into the hallway and find the house to be eerily quiet. The elderly couple’s bedroom door is open, and I peek inside to find the bed made. Maybe they have gone to their son’s island for the morning. I step into the kitchen and find no sign of food having been eaten, but then, the elderly woman is always cleaning around the house when not doing her outside chores.

As I step outside, I look around and begin to think of how similar this land is to the island I came from, the only difference seems to be the population. At the moment, I feel alone and wish to be back on the land I love with my family. My land has also a lighthouse, which is farther from my home than this one is to this home, but we still see the light at night. I am thinking of the times my siblings and myself have played around the lighthouse, never seeing another person around. The lightkeeper’s home on my island is much smaller than the home here. I sigh. I must not think of my land as it continues to make me sad.

I realize I have no idea what chores need to be completed today since the elderly man barely spoke to me the night before. Deciding on my own what I can do, I head back to the lighthouse to make sure it is in proper working order. I feel a tingle in my belly as I near the house of the woman who is to be my wife. I stop at the thought of seeing her after the dream I experienced. Thinking of her touching me in the loving manner she did, I wonder if that is what she will be doing when we actually lie together. I feel hotness come upon my face as I am sure she will be doing more than simply brushing the hair from my forehead and kissing it afterward. When my parents explained what would happen if I had to lie with a man who would be my husband, he would touch me in places no other will ever touch, and I would do the same to him.
