Chapter Thirteen

It took me less than five minutes to convince them all to perform tonight. With as much as I don’t want any of them where Indigo would be able to see or harm them, I know that Maia is safest with me and I can protect her.

Though I still don’t know how I’m going to explain where the Malus Twins are, but Ezra did say the “asses” inside of my home and I’m fairly certain they’re still holed up at Crispin and Needle’s place.

Maia gently taps the top of my head when I almost walk in through the main entrance. Ezra hates when I do that, but sometimes I like to pretend that I’m as much of a showman as he expects me to be.

And the best part is that no one ever thinks anything of me when they see me. I look like them—normal on the outside and the picture of health.

When I climb up the stairs and take center stage is when they realize that I’m not as “one of them” as I appear. Especially not when I recruit an audience member to come up onto the stage with me and tell them to do their best.

As I walk around the side of the large tent, my hands firmly gripping Maia’s ankles, I think about the one normal person that almost killed me.

I had just joined the Carnaval and wanted to impress Ezra. Something about the way he looked at me when I didn’t react to his fondling my body stuck with me.

I asked for three members of the audience that night. I gave one a mallet that’s used in the games outside to test one’s strength. I gave the other one of Crispin’s fencing swords, and the last one I gave a simple wrench.
