CHAPTER 22
Gina looked around the lobby of the headquarters building of Dunning Bank & Trust. âThis is that upscale kind of shit you see on TV.â
âWatch your mouth, Gina,â Beverly said. âI cannot believe you have never visited your sister at work.â
The two women walked to the bank of elevators to the right of the receptionist desk.
âThey got a restaurant, a shoe store, a boutique, a coffee shop and a bank in the lobby?â Gina gawked turning around as she did. âYou donât have to leave the building for anything.â
âSome businesses like to make life as easy for their employees as possible.â Beverly nodded. âYou know they have a daycare in the basement. You can leave LilWayne there while you work and the girls are in school.â
âWhatâs that going to cost? A mint plus an arm?â Gina laughed as they entered the elevator.
âI think itâs free to the employees.â
âGet outâ¦.. Free?â Gina gaped at her. âOkay, okay, I can get with that. This job thing might not be a bad idea. But they got to pay me.â
Beverly glared at her daughter. âLet me make myself clear, Gina. You are going to get this job, so you can get my grand-babies away from that gang infested neighborhood. If you screw this up, Iâm done. Iâve held your hand for damn near ten years. You are too damn smart to be living like this and Iâm tired of it. Itâs time for your ass to go to work and stop walking around like somebody owes you something. Myles is giving you an opportunity and you damn well better take it.â
âI am, Momma. Iâm just saying they better be talking some dollars. Minimum wage is not going to take care of me and my children. Thatâs all Iâm saying.â
The elevator doors opened on the top floor of the headquarters building. Beverly stepped onto the plush burgundy and gold carpet of the second floor lobby. She walked across the lobby to the corridor that led to the executive offices.
âWhoa,â Gina exclaimed.
Beverly turned back to see her daughter turning in a slow circle as she took in the artwork on the wall, the furniture in different seating areas, and the all-around luxury of the building.
Beverly walked back to where Gina was standing. âWill you act like you belong?â
âOh, I do belong here,â Gina giggled. âThis place was made for me. Look at that chair.â She ran over to a white leather chaise that was positioned against the wall. Gina laid on it, then crossed her feet at the ankles. The bottom of her navy and white dress, had a flair out, cascading towards the floor. A man walked out of one of the offices with his head down and a tablet in his hand. He glanced over at her with a look of astonishment on his face.
Gina smiled. âI know. I make this chair look good, right?â
The man smiled as Beverly pulled Gina from the chair. âThere is no excuse for her.â
âYou have to appreciate her inner admiration.
