Day 28

Can you believe it? Twenty-eight days of hospitalization? Four weeks ago tonight, life was so normal, so peaceful and enjoyable. Little did we know how much our lives were about to change!

Every morning, Harry’s blood results determine what he needs for the day. His BUN and creatinine (kidney function) were a bit high today, so he had dialysis for three hours.

Unfortunately, high BUN and creatinine levels can also cause nausea. Yep, you guessed it—Harry tossed his cookies ... all over himself. EVERYTHING needed to be replaced—every IV, every monitor, every catheter, every dressing, even the abdominal dressing. So much for a peaceful day!

Once Harry finished dialysis, got all ‘new equipment’ and got cleaned up, he actually did have a peaceful day. He is still very out of it, because of his pain meds. But he is calm and responsive, and once woken up, smiles and tries to talk. If the valve is in, we can hear his softly spoken words, otherwise, we make a valiant effort to lip read. When we asked him what he thought of Harrison’s buzz cut, he said, “Love it!” He laughs and responds well to humor. He looks very quizzically at all of the odd things attached to him, and sometimes asks about them.

With each passing day, he will comprehend and remember more, and soon conversations will be more normal. For now, talking is very sweet in its simplicity. When I left tonight, I bent to kiss his cheek, and he turned to me and puckered up for a kiss. SO sweet!!!!

Good-night,

Cathy
