Tired from staying up past four, and without Mizti to wake her, Suzanne slept until nine o’clock the next morning. When she woke, she panicked until she remembered Cade’s mom had Mitzi. She sprang out of bed to find them, but realized she had nothing to wear but the filthy, smoky clothes she’d taken off the night before when she’d showered.

After a quick search, she found a fluffy white robe in the closet, and, using the comb in her purse, she managed to tidy her hair.

But she didn’t waste time on makeup. She raced from her room and knocked on the door of the suite beside hers, the room Cade’s mom had shared with Mitzi. But no one answered. Realizing they were probably already up and about, she ran down the wide spiral staircase, through the echoing marble foyer and to the hall, where she stopped.

She had no idea where Ginny and Mitzi were. The house was huge and it wasn’t the only place they could be. There were barns, stables, a swimming pool, ponds. They could be anywhere.

Still, going to the only room she knew—the big office where she’d had her fateful conversation with Cade—didn’t seem wise.

Except, he’d probably know where his mother was with Mitzi.

With a deep breath, she strode to the office and found him sitting behind the massive desk. Color suddenly warmed her cheeks. Not only did she remember what he’d been planning the last time they were in this room, but also she was practically naked beneath this robe. And he would know that.

This was not the way to downplay their attraction.

A dark-haired man in a suit sat on one of the chairs in front of the desk. Seeing her, he rose.

Cade rose, too. His eyes made a quick trip down her robe-covered body. “Suzanne.”

She clutched the collar more tightly together. “Where is everybody?”

“If you mean Mitzi,” Cade said, pretending great interest in something on his desk, as if using his search as a way to keep his eyes off her, “my mom is feeding her breakfast on the patio by the pool.”

She turned to race away, but Cade stopped her. “Hey, before you go, I want you to meet Eric.”

She stopped, faced them again. “Eric?”

The young man in the dark suit nodded slightly. “Nice to meet you, ma’am.”

“Eric is my personal assistant. I just gave him the rundown on your situation. He’ll lead the search for accounts your grandmother might have set up for you that you don’t know about.”

She’d forgotten about that. “Oh.”

“You authorized it.”

She swallowed. “Yes. I remember.”

“Don’t scowl as if you’ve made a deal with the devil. Using my staff is just a way to save you some money.” His voice shifted, changed, and laughter filled it as he said, “Money which you need, since you’re now partner in a restaurant.”

“Diner,” Suzanne corrected, straightening her spine. Did he think she was going to bail? Or, worse, did he think she and Amanda Mae were going to fail? “And I’m fine with the promises I made last night.
