It took about twenty minutes for Dean to stop crying and asking if it was really true if he was really going to be a dad. By the end, Ash’s hair was wet from all the tears that had dripped into it.

“I’m not sad,” he said, between demands to know if he was really going to be a dad. “I just can’t believe it. All I ever wanted to have was a girl like you, and now I’m gonna be a dad as well, I just…”

He always started crying again before he could finish that sentence, but Ash knew exactly what he meant.

They walked back to the house arm-in-arm, still in their roleplay clothes. Ash was pretty sure that if Dean wasn’t scared that she was getting cold and thirsty, he would have stayed crying in the horse stall for another few hours at least.

“Hey, lovebirds,” Phoebe called out as they stepped into the house. “How—whoa, what happened?”

She was staring at Dean’s swollen red-lined eyes in horror, as though afraid one of her horses had punched him in the face. Ash opened her mouth to tell her friend everything was fine but Dean got in first. “Ash is going to have a baby. My baby.”

He started crying again.

Ash, who had known Dean would keep the baby news to himself for about one-eighth of a second, smiled apologetically at Phoebe. “I only just found out.”

“Wow, congratulations!” Phoebe came forward and kissed them both on the cheek. When she kissed Dean, she was folded into a crushing hug. “Thank you,” he said into her hair. “This is the best day of my life, and you helped. Thank you.”

“That’s cool,” Phoebe said, rubbing her hands up and down his back for reasons Ash suspected had very little to do with comfort. “I know you love horses. When your little person gets a bit bigger…”

Ash, who sensed where the offer was headed waved a frantic hand at Phoebe, but it was too late.

“…you can bring them up here, too. Teach the kid how to ride like their daddy.”

Dean started sobbing, big loud gasps as all-consuming as when he first heard the news she was pregnant. Phoebe found herself discarded as Dean swept Ash into his arms and buried his face in her hair.

“Sorry,” Ash said to Phoebe, who looked a little put out. “This is kind of a huge deal.”

“It’s fine,” Phoebe said. “Not every day you find out you’re having a kid.”

They stayed for a celebratory cup of tea and when Dean was finally calm enough to drive he and Ash changed back into their regular clothes and headed for their cars.

“I should go back to your grandma’s house,” Dean said as they stood in front of Tangerine, Ash’s beloved orange Kingswood. “I’ll work on it all night and all of tomorrow and the next day until it’s done.”

Ash wrapped her arms around her man’s middle. “We can fix up the house whenever, Red, it doesn’t matter.”

“But—”

“I know you want to give baby
