Chapter 11

Wes

Eva left the house, and I watched as her image disappeared behind the gates at the front. When I closed the door, I was struck by the oppressive silence of the house. It weighed on me, reminding me of how alone I was.

I’d always liked silence. It was part of why I’d moved here, so why did I already miss Eva, her warm vanilla scent, her easy teasing smile, her voice? She made the house feel like more than some minimalistic structure I’d been proud of days ago.

I didn’t even have her number to tell her that. Or to tell her that I wanted more than sex. A new realization I didn’t exactly like. I wanted to make her smile. Wanted to tell her being a rebel was a good thing, to ask a million questions, all inspired by her mother barging into my house.

Shaking my head, I went to get ready, eager to wash all those questions down the drain. She was too young for a real relationship, still discovering who she was, and I didn’t need to break her or mold her into what I thought was best.

Just that thought nearly made me laugh. She’d hiss and sass me into submission if I were any softer or rougher with her.

I hopped into my car about half an hour later, noticing that just about everyone had Christmas decorations up. I wondered when I’d been able to forget Christmas. Maybe around twenty-five? Maybe when it only made residency harder?

I rode the elevator, remembering the last time I was in here with a familiar beauty. Even as I got up and got myself settled in my office, I couldn’t seem to get Eva off my mind. I’d showered her scent off me, hadn’t let her touch me once I was inside her, but she was still fogging my mind even when people were relying on me.

After a few deep breaths, I managed to focus on patients. It was the bare minimum to give them every ounce of my attention. I took care of them diligently, even if it was tempting to count down the time until I’d see Eva again when looking at the couch instead of counting a heartrate.

By the time I had an hour break between patients, I was almost exhausted. A headache teased my temple, telling me I was thinking too much. I updated a few files to help out the nurses and keep us on schedule, then relaxed in my office, pushing the photo of my mother and father back into the proper position.

“Dr. Hudson, Eva Easton is here to see you,” the office manager said over our work phone.

I popped some headache medicine and nodded. “Send her in, please.”

I straightened in my chair with my eyes fastened to the door, waiting for her to make an appearance. Today, she was in one of those snug little pencil skirts that hugged her slender curves and a chiffon top that was tucked in, emphasizing her small waist. Her hair was pinned up again, streaks of rebellious blue that matched the color of her eyes.
