Chapter Nine

He’d made a reservation for the steak house that afternoon before taking his nap. Vanessa looked around as they entered and were greeted by the hostess. “Lovely decor. I’ve never been here, but I’ve driven by and wondered if it was any good.”

“The food here is supposed to be great, and it’s not too loud, so we can actually carry on a conversation.” He paused. “Wow, do I sound old or what?”

Rolling her eyes, Vanessa said, “You are not old. I like being able to talk without shouting too.”

Will leaned closer and whispered directly into her ear, “You’ll be doing enough shouting later if I have anything to say about it.”

“Oh, my,” she answered, fanning herself before laughing and shaking her head.

She must think I’m kidding.

The hostess seated them and they opened their menus. Will watched Vanessa surreptitiously, hoping she would order whatever she wanted without regard to price or how much food it was. “What looks good to you?”

“I know I said I wanted a steak, but I don’t eat much seafood anymore either. It’s not exactly on a college student’s budget, so I was looking at the cioppino.”

He nodded. “An excellent choice if you’re not going to get steak.”

“What are you ordering?”

“I’m a red meat lover, so I thought I’d go with the prime rib.”

“Ohhhh, I haven’t had that in a long time either.”

“You can have some of mine.”

“We could share both entrees if you want.”

Will wasn’t sure why the thought of that tickled him so much, but he smiled and replied, “That sounds like a great plan.” The server approached and took their order and then Will sat back in the booth. “So tell me about school.”

Wrinkling her nose, Vanessa said, “You really want to hear about it?”

“I really do.”

“Well, like I think I told you before, I’m a senior, graduating in December, so I’m done with all those dumb classes everyone has to take. Now it’s mostly psych electives just to have enough courses to get the degree. But at least most of them are interesting, like the Psychology of Sex class that I’m writing the BDSM paper for.”

“Sounds it. I took a bunch of psych classes myself. I always knew I wanted to do something like the hostage negotiations and figured the more insight I had into the human mind the better.”

She nodded. “I could see where that would come in really handy. Some of the classes are pretty dry, though. I get totally lost and then have to fight sleep in my Cognitive Psych course.”

“Okay, you’re gonna have to explain what that is.”

“Basically, psychology of the brain. It’s really complicated and there are a lot of medical terms. It’s not like I’m stupid or anything, but some of this stuff goes right over my head.”

“Are you afraid you’re not going to pass the class?”

“No, the papers will save me. I never thought I’d say this, but thank God for papers.” Vanessa gave a rueful shake of her head before taking a sip of her water and continuing.
