Two hours later, Marc’s body was feeling the warm burn in his thighs and shins and calves as he ran. The burning started off slight and got worse and worse with every step he took, and Marc simply had to grit his teeth and ignore it. Annoyingly enough, having a preposterously high Marathon Running skill didn’t actually make the pain less, it just meant that he found himself shockingly able to ignore it. It was like there was a whole part of his brain set up to take the pain and squeeze it into a box.

The rest of him kept running.

He was just thinking about how much he wished that he could learn flying spells already when a crack split the air. The tree above his head exploded with a spray of splinters and he heard a loud: “Fuck!”

Marc snapped his head to the side.

Two goblins were laying on a boulder. Both of them had an AK-47. One of their barrels was smoking. Marc drew his fighting pike – but rather than running at the goblins, he kept going in his straight line. Another bullet cracked past his head, and a third whipped towards his arm – but he was able to swing the pike in a twirling arc, literally spinning it around his wrist like a baton, and knocked that bullet away with a spark. He shifted his grip to the other hand as bullets chased him back to another copse of trees.

The goblins gaped after him.

Marc glanced left, glanced right, then took a slight turn. There was a rise ahead, boulders jutting from between the trees. He knew that running along boulders wasn’t the best idea – but if there were any more goblins lurking, they’d be there.

Marc burst from the brushes and came onto three goblins, who were all looking around wildly. “Where is-” one started.

“There he is!” the other squeaked and brought their AK-47 around. A burst of fire turned the brushes to the left of Marc into a pile of kindling and split leaves, while Marc sprang up and over a rock, landing on the far side, and then brained the goblin in the side of the head with his fighting pike. Without breaking stride, he thrust the tip of the pike through the carrying strap of his AK-47 and flung it ahead of himself. He stashed the staff in the inventory and caught the AK-47 right from the air.

The two other goblins didn’t manage to recover from their surprise before he was leaping down off the rise, landing and continuing his run into the forest.

Marc heard a voice, squalling and loud: “Wolfe is heading to map grid 4A! Repeat! He’s running flat out and he has my gun!”

How organized are these jackasses? Marc thought, because he was too focused on breathing steadily to even speak aloud.

The first hint of how organized they were was when the ground about fifty yards ahead of him exploded in a roar of fire and flashing smoke. Shrapnel whined past his head and screamed into the trees, while the nearest tree to the explosion began to topple.
