CHAPTER 5

“You rode one!?”

Alanna had never heard that particular tone from the General before, and she wasn’t exactly sure how to respond. “Yes?”

“Of all the stupid, crazy things I have seen Starters do-“

Color heated her face as Alanna weathered the General’s rant for a few minutes longer. She had expected to be lectured, but what she hadn’t anticipated was the enclosing hug the woman had given her when she had walked into the room. Or the “Thank You” she had whispered in her ear. There had even been a hint of tears in Zalira’s eyes as she listened to Alanna’s recount of the images of her parents being dragged away to be turned into one of the enemy.

“Did you get the feeling that every group of Spyders would have one of these Queens?”

The question brought her back to the moment and Alanna shook her head, “No. I don’t think there are as many as she was trying to make me believe. I think the General’s do most of the work.”

“Captured Starter’s.” The General sat down, tenting her fingers in front of her face as she thought about that. If it was true, she had captured and imprisoned one of her own before sending it to battle Alanna in front of the world. That wasn’t something she wanted to think about, and it certainly wasn’t something she wanted to admit to the press. Finally, she asked, “Do you think there is anyway to save them?”

A tear rolled down Alanna’s face as she shook her head. “No. I could almost feel their glee as they dragged my parents away. They know what they are doing, and there isn’t anything we can do for the ones they turn into monsters.”

The General sat quiet for a moment before nodding. “Then we will continue to fight the monsters. For their sake and ours. But that leads me to my next problem – you can't stay as a student at Harris Academy."

"General?" Alanna's chest constricted in fear, she couldn't lose everything. Not now, not when these were the only family she had left.

"Oh, don't look at me like that. You're far from a lost puppy. Now you are a trained dog, and one that I can't spare sitting around here all day, taking classes that you could teach at your level. Instead, I am sending you and your harem out to hunt and kill every last Queen there is. If these aliens think they can invade our home, turn us into slaves or worse, and not have a fight on their hands, they need to think again. Burn every last one of them in our country, and when you are done, pick a new location and start again until the galaxy knows to fear us. Knows that we won't be made into cosmic batteries for their consumption."

A proud smile burst over Alanna's face. "Yes, General!" She paused before asking, "What about Mr. Ashford?"

"Nonsense and politics, as usual." General Zalira waved the question away, "He has his daughter back to bury, that is all I can give him.
