Chapter Nineteen

Encounter

He had felt it all before—the strange sensation of waking up after a fall, the blurred vision, the hollow sounds. But he had not been so lucky in those waking moments to share it with someone so beautiful in his arms.

David still cradled Zoe in his embrace. She lay atop his stomach, and he upon the cobblestone street. She, too, had succumbed to unconsciousness, but David knew it was better than the alternative.

He looked around to see what had happened since he had blacked out. Fighting still overwhelmed the streets around Blacklehn’s forced entry, and bodies lined the ground around David, victims of that terrible explosion that almost claimed the girl’s life. From his vantage, he couldn’t see anything clearly. Even the voices and sounds of combat were a struggle to comprehend, the numbing inferno still resonating in his eardrums.

He gently stroked Zoe’s hair with his thumb, and she slowly awoke, blinking away her confusion. She rose, making eye contact and grinning weakly.

David rolled to his side, carefully placing the girl on the ground. He stood, trying to gather where he was, how far into the city Blacklehn had pressed in, and how he could best force them back out.

Randall and Grant were both nearby to the cavity in the wall where men still managed to filter through. Each was separated by a legion of soldiers, both allies and enemies.

Zoe grabbed David around his wrist, and hoisted herself up.

“I need to get you to safety,” he said to her.

She paused while she let the words echo into her mind, but then met David with a frown. “I will not leave while my father is fighting.”

“I need to get someone to watch over you then. Where’s your brother?” David asked. The sentence quickly trailed off as he looked to the wall.

Garrett was no longer there, causing David to look around anxiously in all directions. He then saw the man rising much the way he had, beside a house about thirty feet southeast from them. “Come on,” the big man said, pulling the girl along as he went. “Garrett,” he cried out, though his words were not heard.

“I need to find my bow,” she shouted.

“I’ll get it for you,” David offered. “While you wait with your brother.”

She didn’t like the idea of being handed off to her brother, but she could do little to resist the firm pull of her large guardian.

They arrived beside Garrett only a short while later. He blinked his eyes and shook his head, but didn’t immediately acknowledge the presence of his sister and her bodyguard.

“Are you all right?” David asked.

“My eyes are blurry, and my back is killing me,” Garrett replied.

“Old age will do that to you,” Zoe joked.

“Garrett, I need you to watch your sister,” David said. The other man nodded, so he turned to the girl. “Please, stay with him.”

Zoe wore the same frown, but managed a nod, gaining a weak grin from David, who turned, rushing back the way he came.

David looked back
