Chapter 9 - McKenna

“Not really in a cooking mood" was an understatement. McKenna felt like going home and crying, but she didn’t exactly have a home to return to. She couldn’t get back to her old apartment, and that place never felt like home anyway. The house she and Mason shared still felt too new and foreign to really be counted as a home in her mind. Going out to get food seemed like it would be a welcome distraction, so she agreed to Mason’s offer.

She was still struggling to process his reaction to everything she had confessed. He had responded like he cared about her. Like he wanted to protect her. McKenna couldn’t remember anyone ever responding to her like that before. She couldn’t even remember anyone ever being truly angry on her behalf. She was beginning to think she had misjudged Mason.

Maybe I should try to get to know him at least, she thought.

After an admittedly delicious breakfast at the diner, they returned back to their house. As they walked in the door, Mason paused.

“I was thinking maybe we could try to get to know each other some more,” Mason said. McKenna froze.

This is the perfect chance, she thought to herself. To try to start fresh.

She heard herself agreeing, almost as if her mouth was working on its own accord.

“Maybe we could get dinner tonight. I could drive you over to your old apartment before or after, pick up some of your things.”

That sounded like an appealing proposition for multiple reasons. Partially because McKenna was beginning to think that maybe she could trust Mason after all. She still wasn’t willing to let herself truly get her hopes up, but she remembered the tender way he gazed at her earlier, and found herself wanting to spend more time with him. The second was far less sentimental. She sorely needed to get more clothes from her old apartment and waiting till her cousin was free in a couple of days was more than a little inconvenient. She had already worn the same outfit twice in a row. She tried to convince herself the latter was the main reason she accepted his offer.

“I’d like that. Though, we might want to make that trip before, because I don’t really have anything dinner-worthy here to change into,” McKenna admitted.

“Before it is then. How does 5 o’clock work for you?“ Mason asked. McKenna agreed.

The afternoon rush by quickly, and before she knew it, they were driving towards her old town and she was watching the house disappear in the rearview mirror. When they pulled up to her apartment about half an hour later, it looked exactly as she had left it. The wooden door even

still creaked when she opened it.

Mason followed her inside. She hadn’t asked him to, but he seem to have picked up that she was nervous to be back in the same town as Tyler. She didn’t want to admit it, but she felt grateful for his company.

“I won’t take long.
