We split up.

The day ticked past as I looked for Cass, growing increasingly frustrated and concerned. The instinctive anxiety kept building and brewing inside of my chest, bigger and bigger, blowing up like a balloon. I let out a heavy breath, a shaking exhale.

It was almost time for lunch. We were going to take a break looking for her then. Petra seemed to think that she might turn up for a meal, especially if she had just been laying low somewhere or in her dorm not feeling good.

I stepped into the dining hall and instantly found the two girls. Petra reached out and caught hold of my hand. “I’m sure that she’s going to wash in here ages before we finish eating.”

“Not sure if I can eat,” I admitted.

Bree pointed out, “If something is wrong, you’re going to need your strength. Find a table—I’ll get our chow.”

She turned and vanished through the crowd. Petra led me through the dining hall to one of the tables at the back of the room. It had a clear view of the main door, and an almost clear view of one of the side doors. She was smart like that.

Sitting down, my gaze swept through the room. “I don’t see her anywhere.”

“Lunch has barely been going on for five minutes,” insisted Petra. “She’s going to turn up.”

“And if she doesn’t?” I asked.

Petra frowned, her ears flicking back. It wasn’t a thought that any of us liked, but it was one that we had to think about. Knowing what was wrong was important. Especially since Cass was so thoroughly tangled up in this mess with the betrayals.

“Then we go ahead with our plan for a Public Council and reveal what Beaumont's done,” said Petra, just as Bree returned with two loaded trays.

The food was quickly passed out in various shades of rare and seared. Bree said, “If Beaumont's involved in her going missing, that will get you the answers that you need. He’ll have to tell you where she’s at.”

“And if he’s not actually involved,” said Petra, “then you know that she just got spooked and went into hiding.”

Those words were a comfort, but only for a moment. I shook my head. “Cass wouldn’t go into hiding. She would be too scared about what would happen to her family if she did.”

“I can’t believe her family would do something like that,’ said Bree, disgust heavy in the words. “Family is supposed to be your first pack. The most important set of people that you know.”

“Family can be fucked up,” I told her, thinking about my own parents and the fact that they’d kept an entire world from me. “It’s not always cream and peaches.”

“I know,” said Bree, “but it should be. Not… whatever the hell this is.”

Petra nodded. “I just hope that we’re able to figure it out soon.”

“So you all are on my side with this?” I asked, a little relieved to know that. “Monty—”

“Monty is just trying to be a good general,” said Petra, reaching across the table to give my hand a pat.
