“SHOULD” STATEMENTS

Words like “should,” “must,” or “need to” tend to make you feel bad about yourself or angry at others. These statements often become rigid rules that cause more distress than you might realize. If you think to yourself, “I should have practiced more for that presentation,” you’re beating yourself up for past mistakes instead of living in the present. If you think, “My friend shouldn’t have said that to me,” you’ll feel unnecessarily angry and resentful about a situation you probably couldn’t control. The alternative to “shoulds” is to recognize that things don’t always go your way but you can manage more than you think you can. So yes, it would have been nice if your friend was more sensitive to you, but you’re still friends and you can move past it.
