Being Marsha’s assistant was a constant process of learning and developing. Every time that Anja felt she had reached a place where she was comfortable, some new variable arrived to test her abilities. There were certain aspects of their working relationship where Anja felt like an expert. She knew how to handle emails and how to organize the diary. She no longer felt intimidated when making calls, even when they were to important, powerful people. There was a strength in Anja that had grown from being broken down by Marsha. Nobody could intimidate her in normal life. A movie producer might be powerful, but they would never tie Anja up and spank her. The maitre d’ of a restaurant might sound imperious, but they were nothing when compared to the true superiority of Marsha. This meant that Anja could face all these figures, people who would have scared her in her old life, with a cool-headed courtesy and calm. Nothing fazed her and nobody made her feel small.

Nobody apart from Marsha.

Katheryn was degrading and enjoyed humiliating Anja, but she was not as powerful as Marsha. Katheryn was a star, but Marsha was a supernova or a whole galaxy. Despite the intimacy, even affection, which had grown in their unusual relationship, Marsha could still make Anja quiver. The thought of Marsha’s displeasure made her insides chill and churn. One stern look from Marsha was more powerful than a slap would have been from another person.

Anja had realized that part of the power woman like Marsha and Katheryn wielded came from their unbreakable self-belief. They really did see themselves as superior to Anja. They saw themselves as superior to everybody. It was easy to understand why. Marsha was more beautiful, more graceful and more talented than any other woman. It would be impossible to live that life and not feel like a superior being. Wherever Marsha went, people treated her with, at minimum, great respect. Most people seemed to worship her. She was like an ancient goddess from the Greek myths walking amongst mortals. Sometimes Anja pictured Marsha as Venus Aphrodite, filling simple folk with a combination of adoration and fear. The smile of Marsha could make men and women weak with love. Anja had seen it happen. A runner would bring a new page of script for Marsha to study and she would smile. The runner would struggle to walk straight as they left the room. Far worse was when some poor soul had to inform Marsha that a scene needed to be re-shot due to some technical issue. Marsha would sigh, her smile would vanish, and it would feel as though the sun had disappeared behind thunderclouds. Anja felt great empathy for all those that inspired even the slightest disappointment in Marsha. Her haughty gaze made people’s souls shrivel up like delicate flowers in desert heat.

Given that Marsha was still so frightening, Anja had trouble reconciling her feelings towards her. It seemed like madness to work for a woman where the boundaries between professional and unprofessional were so blurred.
