Ian Stoddard looked at me across the table as I realized he had just asked me a question. I had been so intent on his good looks I hadn’t heard a word.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I was just distracted by your good looks. What did you ask me?”

“There’s an AIDS charity dinner on Friday and I’d like you to come.”

“Like a date? In public?”

“Yes, of course, if you feel you’re ready to take me on.”

“The press will be there?” I asked.

“Of course the press will be there. That’s the point. We need publicity for the charity.”

“I see,” I said.

“So will you come?”

“Black tie?”

“Yes,” said Ian with a twinkle in his eye that rendered me helpless.

“Nobody will know who I am,” I protested.

“Everyone will know after the dinner.”

“It’s sort of like a commitment,” I hedged.

“And after the dinner I’m going to tear that tuxedo off you so fast you won’t know what happened.”

“I’m in,” I said trying not to turn red.
