He goes twice more to the house at Neusiedl, intending to deliver his letter, and twice he fails. The first time is just after he’s written the letter; in the evening again. A maid is bringing in the washing, and so he cannot get into the house—he plans to leave the envelope somewhere on a table or desk—and reluctantly he turns for home.

The second time, he is more daring. He visits in the early afternoon, when Emil and Herr Bauer will probably be at work; he walks with quick, precise steps—I am but a weary rambler who has lost his path—around the inside perimeter of the garden and stops at the yew gate to look at the house.

Two shapes are visible behind a ground-floor window. The girl, Ada, is sitting in the window seat, but it’s the person behind that makes him hiss out his breath and stand, airless. He is forced to admit, as he tries to make sense of every single feature through the swirling glass, that it’s a good face. The mouth spiteful, the eyebrows arched. A person who would eat the world whole. She is sitting, one hand resting on top of her bump, focused on some interior scene. He watches for a minute or so longer, until he has everything memorized.
