Bloog was good. His second shot was beautiful, heading right for Clyde’s waiting vessels. By what felt like sheer luck, the ball hit right between two cups, bounding off their rims and going off the table. It never struck the ground. A blue beam fired out of the ceiling and caught the ping-pong ball just before impact, lifting it up to Clyde’s waiting hand. At least Bloog wasn’t getting balls back this time, but that throw had been heading right for the beer. Clyde was going to have to bring his A-game if he wanted to stand a chance.

First things first, Clyde took the cup with a ball still in it, moved the object to the soaking container, and then downed the rest of the contents. Still cold, thank goodness. Hot beer pong was among the worst tastes possible. Setting the metal cup aside, Clyde lined up his own shot. As weird as it was, the aliens, ship, even Dougie all fell away from Clyde’s focus. This was just beer pong, a game he’d played countless times, even defeating High Tony on a few occasions, a brother whose Zen-like focus made him a hell of a competitor. Clyde might know dick all about sneaking on spaceships or negotiating with interstellar beings, but this, this he could do.

Unfortunately, he failed to prove that as his first shot went well wide, not even hitting the table before the blue beam caught it. Strange noises came from the on-lookers, probably snickering based on the sound Bloog was making, but Clyde paid them no mind. Instead, he focused on his second shot, sending the ball gracefully through the air and down into one of Bloog’s open cups.

“Had to get calibrated,” Clyde said, donning a cockier grin than he rightly deserved after that first toss.

“Pity. Some of us stay that way.” Bloog took his next throw while still drinking the beer Clyde had hit, an unerring throw that hit the mark perfectly. His second toss did the same, forcing Clyde to return the balls. Three cups to five, this was already looking bad.

The next shot, mercifully, came down on empty table, hitting one of the spots where a cup had already been taken away. Bloog looked a tad frustrated on that one, and it showed as his second throw fell short of any potential targets. Interesting. Maybe Bloog was less adept at hitting specific cups than he was putting shots down in their general area. It would still be enough to sink frequently, but it also meant Clyde could have a fighting chance as they neared the end game.

This time, it was Clyde who sank both attempts, and Bloog was definitely looking annoyed as he downed his beers and rolled the ping-pong balls back over. Rather than pressing ahead, Clyde decided it was time to streamline things. “Re-rack, if you don’t mind. Let’s go with a straight line.”

Bloog blinked, almost like he’d forgotten that was a thing they could do. It was starting to all
