Maya looked at him strangely. âAi, you must be alien to be so ignorant. I am human, or earthling, if you prefer, but my people are called Hispanic, or Latina. We tend to have dark hairââshe pointed to her halo of curlsââand tanned skin. Donât tell me everyone on your planet is blue like you?â And she wondered if the blue extended to all his body parts.
âNo, we have different shades depending on the purity of the bloodline and the occasional other color depending on the mixing of alien genes.â
Maya shook her head at the remark that skirted the edge of racism. âIâm not even going to touch that one,â she said, shaking her head. âNow, itâs time you explained exactly what youâre doing here. And youâd better tell the truth, or Iâll call the military police myself. You said something about marrying some human girl?â Actually Maya wouldnât turn him in. Somewhere between the hotel where she worked and her home, sheâd begun to believe his strange taleâkind of hard not to when his eyes kept glowing violet whenever he looked at her. She only wished his mission had been to claim her. She wouldnât have minded becoming his mate.
âI am to mate with the human Amanda Beckwith. She has been chosen by the Oracle and my ancestors to be my mate.â
âWhoâs this Oracle? Is she like a clan elder?â
Lex launched into an explanation. âThe Oracle is the oldest being on our planet. She has always been and always will be. When the females of our planet were killed by a deadly virus, she, along with the spirits of our ancestorsââ
Maya interrupted. âWait a second. Did you say spirits?â
âYes, all who die in the clan are buried in the mausoleums on one of the three moons, thus freeing their spirits to perform deeds. With the help of the Oracle, many are now tasked with finding suitable females for us as mates.â
âThatâs barbaric,â she exclaimed.
âWhat is?â
âArranged marriages.â
âIt is our custom,â he said, frowning at her. âWe require females of other races to breed with and rebuild our population. Once they are selected by our ancestors, we are sent to retrieve them.â
âYou mean you kidnap them? Donât they get a choice?â Maya couldnât believe his chauvinistic attitude. Then again, it was kind of hot in a caveman type of way but also shocking for a woman who had grown up with the right to make her own choices. âAnd how do you think this Amanda will feel about that?â
âWhy, she will accept the honor I extend her, of course.â
Maya giggled. Lex frowned at her, obviously not seeing the humor, and she laughed even harder. âDios, do you have a lot to learn about human women. I hate to break it to you, but while you are one hot alien, that doesnât mean this Amanda is going to drop everything and run off to be your wife. Women here have something called choices. You canât force us to do anything.â
âAre you saying she would refuse me?â The idea seemed to perplex him.
