A PHOTOGRAPHER’S TOOLS

Rooney can be seen holding his camera contraption next to Ali’s right knee. It appears to hold only one camera.

Unlike newspapers today, papers in 1965 rarely printed color photographs, so John Rooney shot his iconic picture using black-and-white film. But another photographer who covered the second Ali-Liston fight said he thought Rooney might have had two cameras with him that night. Neil Leifer of Sports Illustrated said Rooney brought a metal frame that could hold two 35 mm cameras, one on top of the other. The cameras were small and could take pictures rapidly. Using the device, said Leifer, would have let Rooney take both black-and-white and color shots. A photograph taken at the fight shows Rooney holding the metal frame, though at that point it only has one camera in it. If Rooney took color photos that night, none of them have been discovered. In 2015, though, the AP released a color photo taken almost from the same angle as Rooney’s. The company doesn’t know who took it. Leifer was working with color film that night, and his picture of the knockdown has become world-famous.
