My Mission

“I just don’t understand why Freyr and Loki would want to fight against each other,” Skap kept repeating.

We had left the site of the battle ages ago and all that time he kept asking the same question over and over.

“OK, so Loki likes to brawl and he can be pretty darn hateful, but Freyr... Freyr is the god of beauty, he’s a god of peace and serenity. Why would he want to fight Loki?” he kept saying.

I didn’t have any answers for him. I didn’t know anything. All I wanted to think about was the vision of the fabulous Valkyries.

Still, one thing was pretty clear to me. When the gods fight it’s the people who pay the price, with men fighting and dying in battle in the name of the gods.

“What if his sister Freyja was the cause?” Skap wondered. “I think I know,” Skap suddenly exclaimed.

“What?” I asked distractedly.

“I told you the story about Freyja and the role Loki had in it, right?”

“Yes.”

“Clearly, those two don’t like each other very much. Maybe the goddess asked her brother to help her get back at Loki.”

“Now? After all this time?” I wondered.

“Well, they don’t think like mortals from the primary time. For the gods, measuring time doesn’t make any sense. They’re immortal, so the passing of time is all very relative.”

“So they love, hate, or whatever each other, forever?”

“More or less.”

“That’s awful,” I said.

“Well, it’s not like just anyone can become a god.”

“Not everyone would want to be a god either. I for one don’t think I’d like to be one,” I decided.

“But there are also many advantages.”

“Maybe, but I prefer to be exactly what I am. If you want to know the truth, the only thing I want right now is to find a way of getting back to Pieve Olimpia. We’re just walking around aimlessly and it seems like we’re wasting our time.”

But Skap was done listening to me. He was still trying to figure out what was going on with the gods. “But if that were the case, then why not get help from the god Heimdall? He is the guardian of the gods and has already won a battle against Loki. That time it was to rescue Freyja, too,” Skap rambled on.

“Skap... Skaaap, are you listening to me?”

“Yes, yes, that is... I was thinking that the connection must once again be Brisingamen. Old grudges never go away.”

“You’ve already made that clear.”

“And whose destiny crosses paths with the jewel?” he asked.

“How would I know!?”

“Don’t you remember what the Norns said? It’s your destiny!”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“That it wasn’t a coincidence that we witnessed the battle between Freyr and Loki.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“The connection, it’s the necklace.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know,” he said.

“Well, in the meantime, are we going to keep heading in this direction?” I asked as we reached a fork in the path.

“Whichever direction you want.”

“You’re the one who’s supposed to be the guide,” I reminded him.

He scratched his silvery hair. “Well then, we’ll go this way.
