I pulled up to the nondescript building in the middle of Mott Haven, wedging myself between a Jeep Cherokee and a shiny, black Acura. I made sure to take in my surroundings before approaching the building. The cops patrolled this block more than the others, waiting for any sign of life to grant them probable cause to storm the place. On this frigid November night I refused to give them the satisfaction, dashing to the front door and using the intricate knock designated for today. The door swung open, revealing a grim-faced soldier built like a football player. He stepped aside immediately, bidding me a goodnight as I stepped deeper inside. I sniffed the air, feeling my stomach turn at the familiar smell of burning rubber that came with use of a crackpipe.

“Mal?” I said, entering the first room on the right, stepping over crackheads in various phases of getting high. Some were laid out with their pipes slipping from their fingers as they stared straight ahead, while others were on their second and third hits. None of them were young enough to be Mal. “Malone?”

I continued my trek through the building, stopping in the various crack dens that made up the establishment. With the police presence in Mott Haven growing, the hustlers on the block pooled their resources, investing in this foreclosed rental property where they sold to fiends and gave them a place to get high. Mal didn’t spend much time in the projects, meaning that he didn’t have a dealer he trusted to buy from, but he did have friends, childhood friends who would hook him up in exchange for credit.

“Laquan,” I said to a boy posted up in front of a door, texting on the latest iPhone. He rose to his full height, peering down at me with a knowing look. “Laquan, have you seen my brother? I've been looking for him all day.”

Laquan nudged his head at the door. I placed my hand on the knob, and was stopped by Laquan, who was stronger than he looked. “I can't let you go in there. I got clients handling business.”

“Excuse me?”

“I said—” he stopped speaking at the feeling of my gun pressed against his chest.

“You said what?” I retorted, pressing the gun into his chest. “I'm not leaving here without my brother, so you can step aside and let me in to get him, or I can blow a fucking hole in you and go in anyway.”

The fear in Laquan’s eyes disappeared, replaced by pity. “Bri, you don’t need to see him like that. I’ll have somebody drop him off to your house later on—”

“I don’t need your pity, Laquan. I need to get my little brother.”

Placing his hands in the air, Laquan stepped aside, giving me permission to enter the apartment. I gave the knob a firm turn, opening the door and being greeted by the smell of sex. The sounds weren’t too far behind, as crackheads fucked between hits. A single lightbulb hung in
