Chapter Eleven
The only good thing about the pitch-black metro tunnels was the coolness of the clear air. The way was pretty much straight, and they made good progress as they walked under the Nile.
Apart from the odd rat, they saw nothing untoward in the metro tunnels. Tom hoped the lack of the thick Zog down there would keep the zombies at bay until they made it to the exit at Tahrir Square. They had only seen the occasional zombie on the island, but with the bridges destroyed it was an isolated place. He expected it would get worse when they reached the eastern side of the Nile.
Their progress was only halted by a metro train blocking their way down the tunnel. The sides were too thin to fit down, and there was no front entrance like some American subway trains.
âWhat shall we do, sir?â Maynard said as Tom approached the large glass front of the train.
âIf we canât go round, under or over, we have to go through.â Tom pulled his Beretta from its holster and fitted the suppressor to it. He fired five rounds into the toughened windscreen of the cab. Putting his handgun away he used the stock of his M16A4 to smash the glass in. The Navy Seals joined in, as it took a bit of breaking, but soon they had a way into the dark metro train.
Tom, whoâd had enough of walking in the middle, took the lead, and with a boost from Maynard climbed in through the cab window. âWatch your fingers on the glass,â he said to the next man up. He moved over and manually released the cab door with a down pull of a handle. He slid the door three inches across, and then pointed his rifle and light. The first carriage, as far as he could see, was empty and devoid of life, or death. The carriage was modern, with a wide space between the seats on each side. Seeing nothing to worry him, Tom slid the door fully open, as more men bundled into the tight confines of the cab behind him. He moved forwards with his men following on behind. He moved through, slowly at first, checking each angle where a zombie could be waiting, yet there were none. No zombies, no people, no newspapers on the seats even.
He moved through the first carriage, increasing his pace as he approached the door at the other end. The door ahead, and in the next carriage along, had a large, oval shaped window in it, so he could see through to the next carriage. It too was empty as far as he could make out. Maybe his idea about the events of Anno Zombie hitting at night was correct. The metro train could have been on its way back to wherever trains went at night.
Tom looked back to see most of his command following on after him. He pulled open the next door and moved into the second carriage along from the rear of the train.
