THANKS TO THE celebration last night, and the fact that it was freaking dawn, the library was empty when I arrived. A few weak beams of morning light shone through the decorative lead windows as I made my way through the rows.

I spent all night going over the attack and my conversation with Dane. I hadn’t gotten much sleep. By the time dawn rolled around, I had already decided. Two times in a month was enough. I needed to take action, do something.

Step one in my plan, figure out how exactly my mother bound me and how to access my magic at will. I’d felt the seal crack in me before the fire started. If I could discover how I did that, how it worked, maybe I could force it to break. I started in the rituals section. There were a range of books, from easier rituals and summonings to more advance ones. I reached for the advanced tomes first. When Dane had tried to break it, he told me it involved complex blood magic. Somehow, I didn’t think that’d be in the beginner’s section. Instead of brushing against the spine of the book, my hand stopped an inch away, unable to get a centimeter closer.

What the hell?

I moved to the book beside it. Same thing. Again. Same thing. Over and over I tried until I finally decided I must need special permission to get them down. I turned to the beginners. By the time the sun was high and a few students had begun to trickle into the library, I’d gone through a dozen or so books, flipping through their sections and table of contents for anything close to binding. Just like I’d imagined, I found nothing.

I chewed my cheek. I needed answers, but if Dane hadn’t discovered anything, what chance did I have? It wasn’t like I could read every book in the library. I sighed, slamming the book I was holding shut.

I turned to my second objective. I hadn’t been able to bring myself to buy the book at the bookstore. It seemed too awkward and pathetic. Besides, I’d told myself it didn’t matter at the time. I had no interest in learning about my murderous mother who’d ditched me at birth.

Except now I wasn’t so sure. Someone wanted me dead, and wouldn’t it reason that the only grudge someone could even have on me involved the fact that my mother murdered a person they loved? It seemed motive enough to me.

I made my way up to the history section, hoping to find a copy or something similar. But after thirty minutes scanning the shelves, I concluded that the library didn’t have a copy. Which made sense. If there’d been a book that mentioned my mother, surely the witchlight would’ve taken me to it the first night. Instead, it had shown me probably the only thing in this school with her name.

I knocked three times.

If the witchlight was intelligent enough to take me to a photo, it was possible it would be able to help me here.
