Chapter 7

Darren paid for their drinks, ignoring the epic battle raging between his head and his heart. Brie had been honest. She would find the Wisher and bring his blood back to the Winter Realm, whatever that meant.

He would never see her again.

And here he was, so desperate to soak up more time with her, that he had offered to help her in her quest. He was heading straight for emotional disaster, and he knew it.

But he couldn’t fucking stop himself.

Every tiny smile, every small trust she placed in him, made him hungry, voracious for more. The sound of her laughter filled up empty spaces in his soul he’d never realized existed. This was foolhardy, and he’d be ruined by the time she left him behind, but he lied to himself that it would be worth it to have the time together now.

He didn’t even try to imagine she wasn’t really an elf from another world who walked though some magical veil. After last night’s vanishing clothes, the blanket that appeared out of nowhere to cover them on the couch, and her sensitive ears…warmth shot to his groin as memories of their night together filled his head again.

Shit. He was falling for a woman who wasn’t even…human.

He took her back to his crappy apartment and turned on the lights.

He walked her over to his music corner where his electric piano keyboard sat next to his tiny desk. After clearing off the desk chair, he offered her the seat and he took the piano bench. “I want you to hear something.”

She nodded and settled in the chair.

And suddenly his stomach was full of butterflies. He’d played so many gigs in bars and venues all over LA in pursuit of an elusive record deal, or at least a notice by another artist who might hire him to write a song for them.

He thought nerves were miles behind him.

He shook out his hands and peered at the new song he’d written in the wake of finding her gone. No. Too new.

He set it aside, opting to play another song he’d written that had become a staple of his shows.

His fingers found the keys instinctively so he could steal glances over at her as he sang about longing for the girl on the same subway, every day, but he never talks to her. When he finished the final chorus about missed opportunities, she clapped.

“You’re a bard.”

“A songwriter,” he corrected.

She grinned. “Both.” She pointed to his guitar case leaning against the wall. “Is that another instrument?”

He nodded and got up to retrieve it. “It’s called a guitar. Do you have them in…your world?”

She inspected his guitar and lifted her gaze. “We have stringed instruments, but they don’t look like this.”

He slid the shoulder strap over his head and gripped the neck. “One more song?”

“I’d love that.” She smiled and there was a sparkle in her blue eyes that fed his ego. He’d seen that spark before while he performed.

Desire.

He strummed the guitar and crooned out his most requested love song.
