Chapter 21

Elizabeth

Mondays were slow at the shop, so Kira worked the day and when I came in after classes around three, she’d go home. Angel also had every other Monday off so he could work that Saturday instead, which gave Kira the day off. We were debating hiring a third employee to make sure there was always a second person on. We didn’t like leaving Kira alone, even for a few hours.

Knowing that Sebastian could see her on the cameras gave us a little comfort. Her man, Hoax, also hung out sometimes when he wasn’t in class, doing homework behind the counter or whatever.

Still, it would make us feel better if she were never alone. Being off campus helped to put some of our unease to rest but not all of it. There were far too many questions left unanswered. Besides, one might think that being attached to the school would protect us from some crazies. Most of those who’d come into our popup shop had been a student or part of the staff and faculty.

Now anyone off the streets could walk in.

It’s not like being within the dorms had protected us from the crazies. There was that one man who tried to convince Kira to give him our personal information. That was still in the air, too. We didn’t know who he was or what he wanted. Nor had he come back.

Three hours alone in our shop wasn’t so bad. That’s what I was convincing myself of, anyway. I had music on, the bell over the door was there to alert me when someone came in, and I was in the back fulfilling online orders. I felt like this alone could sustain us. We shipped so many online orders every single day! It’s really no wonder we never had any inventory.

It was also incredibly satisfying to know that we hit such a niche market in a way no one else had. Not how we were doing it, anyway. It was truly incredible and humbling how quickly we’d taken off. With enough money in the business account to pay our two employees pretty well, open a brick-and-mortar store, and have the ability to continue to expand. All within the first six months!

We’d taken to recording our fulfilling some orders and posting them online. Especially when they were big with a lot of good stuff. We had a video recording unit attached to the wall overlooking what we were doing. When we got a particularly good one, we’d flip it on.

Right now was one of those moments. I gathered the items and made sure they were off camera before setting up my phone within the brackets. As long as we were careful not to move the arm of the handle too much, we didn’t have to do anything but turn on the ring light and begin recording.

Our custom boxes were black with our logo across the top. We had black bubble mailers that were the same, too, for orders like condoms and such.
