Section 4

American Christianity: 1500 to the Present

Time lines, maps, and images for this section

These are provided on the author’s website: www.studythechurch.com/amchhist for free. The time lines are available by century and all three can be used as an aide to help understand the development of Christianity in this time period better.

American Christianity, as defined in this section, is Christianity as it developed in the current United States. While it branched off from European Christianity and, therefore, drew from the features and divisions of European Christianity, it quickly established its form. Over the 500-plus years of American Christianity, it not only created unique solutions to problems and creative innovations, but just as the Protestant Reformation was exported around the world, many of those American solutions and innovations were exported around the world. This section will examine many features of American Christianity. From its first answer to a uniquely American problem (the Halfway Covenant) to its first unique theological problem to its homegrown heresies to the development of online classes and even seminaries with social media driving a need for even more innovation, these 500-plus years of American Christianity produced changes that reverberated around the world.
