Chapter Sixteen: Damian
âIâm telling you Jude; the cape works wonders on you.â
I was temporarily blinded as Jude threw a bejeweled cape in my face, blocking my vision. We had been working furiously to try and get the theater in running shape, which was no easy feat for two people, even if one was a demon deal-maker.
âWhy are we spending so much time on this ridiculous theater,â Jude snapped, âWe should be focusing on the getting the girl to sign the masterâs book.â
âThat is exactly what Iâm doing,â I answered twirling an old-fashioned black and white magic wand between my fingers, âThis theater is the key to getting Mirah on our side. If she agrees to work with us, then weâll be spending a lot of time together, and then,â I slide the tip of the magic wand down so that it became a bouquet of fake flowers and handed them to Jude, âI will make her mine.â
âYou mean you will make her masterâs,â Jude replied smacking the flowers out of my hand.
âSame difference,â I called. My chest tightened at the thought, but I brushed it aside as I dove further into the prop closet. Restoring the theater had become an obsession of mine since Mirah had left the other night. I couldnât place why, but something inside of me knew that getting this show together would be the key to seeing Mirah again.
I stared down at my palm and glided my finger across my palm lines. I wanted to see Mirah again, and if I was being honest with myself, I didnât just want to see her again because of the deal.
I clenched my fist and shook my head. I couldnât afford to think this way. There was work to be done and I was going to ensure that when I was back in the afterlife, I was going to have a sweet deal waiting for me.
âIf you really want to make yourself useful,â I chirped at Jude who was fidgeting around with a set of trick top hats, why donât you go and hand out some flyers. With your sweet smile and warm demeanor, Iâm sure youâll have people flocking to our theater in no time.â
Jude rolled his eyes at me, grabbed a stack of flyers that I had printed out earlier, and stalked out of the room.
Once he had left, I let out a sigh of relief. Working with Jude was like working with a very organized toy soldier. He was constantly being wound up and whirled around the space in a stiff nervous fashion and it was starting to get to me.
I walked over the trick top hats that Jude was adjusting and flipped one onto my head, chuckling nervously to myself. All of this relied on Mirah agreeing to work with me. If she didnât agree to work at the theater, or worse, if I never heard from her again. All of this work would be for nothing. I didnât have her number; I didnât know where she lived.
