Dear Jennie,

Thanks so much for the wonderful birthday present! It arrived for me two days before the big event. How did you know that I loved poetry? The collection by William Gilmore Simms is a wonderful gift. I can just see you rummaging through a dusty old bookstore in Charleston looking for something. It so reminds me of South Carolina, I’ll bet you didn’t know that Granddaddy use to read Simms’ poems to me before I went to sleep at night. I’ll treasure it forever! Especially because it’s from you. (Can you believe that we’re now seventeen?)

I’ve got great news! I found out today that I passed the entrance exam for the Naval Academy! Yep, Midshipman Rutledge at your service, ma’am. I’m really excited; unfortunately, it seems I’m the only one. Mother and Father aren’t the least bit keen on me leaving England. Neither is Sterling. Of course, He’s not to keen about anything I do.

Jennie, I hope you understand how I feel. It’s something that I have to do. Not just for me, but for my family. Please tell me that you think I’m doing the right thing.

We’re all so disappointed that you and your folks won’t be coming over for Christmas. Palm Beach sounds like a nice place, though, warm weather, the beach and all. I hope y’all have a great time and as the train passes through Yemassee, don’t forget to wave to Mr.Harvey!

Well, I gotta run to chapel before I get marked out. Thanks again for the birthday present.
